Tsonga J-W. News
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, 3-time winner in Marseille (2009, 2013 and 2017), has played only 3 matches in the last two seasons, losing them all. The 35-year-old Frenchman was tormented by injuries and missed the Marseille tournament in 2020. His last appearance here was in 2019, when Tsonga was defeated in the first round by Andrey Rublev. After defeats with Miomir Kecmanovic (Doha) and Alexei Popyrin (Australian Open) in 2020, Jo participated in February 2021 in Montpellier, but also lost here, 4-6, 2-6 with Sebastian Korda.
Lopez F. News
Feliciano Lopez, 39, has no plans to retire in 2021, announcing a full-time program this season. The Iberian, semifinalist in Marseille in 2005, returns to the French tournament for the first time since 2016, when he was eliminated in the first round by Sergiy Stakhovsky. Feli has played 4 matches since 2021, with a record of two victories and two defeats. After a failure with Kevin Anderson at the Great Ocean Road Open, Lopez made two rounds at the Australian Open. The Iberian defeated Li Tu and Lorenzo Sonego, then was defeated by Andrey Rublev.
Tsonga has an obvious advantage in the matches with Lopez, but the two have not met since 2012. The Frenchman is not at an optimal physical level, and the Spaniard will aim for the first direct victory.
