PREVIEW & TIPS Dominika Cibulkova VS Mona Barthel
A very good tennis pick for today is Dominika Cibulkova vs. Mona Barthel, two near-level players. The match is played in the WTA semifinals – SINGLES: Budapest (Hungary), hard (indoor). Dominika Cibulkova starts up as favorite for this match.
Dominika Cibulkova News
Dominika Cibulkova, the top seed at the Hungarian Ladies Open, faced very little difficulty in going through the first three matches of her debut appearance at the tournament. She knocked down local wildcard Fanny Stollar, Belgian #3 Kirsten Flipkens, and Johanna Larsson, all in straight sets.
This is Cibulkova’s first semifinal since New Haven (2017) and first indoor semifinal since St. Petersburg (2017). Indoor European tournaments have never been a priority for the former world #4, although, she played a total of four indoor events in 2016 (career best season), winning three of them (Katowice, Linz, Singapore).
Cibulkova’s 2017 season was a sharp contrast to how her 2016 went. She reached a total of seven finals in 2016, including major tournaments like Madrid and Wuhan. The year culminated in her winning the biggest title of her career, the WTA Finals, at Singapore. In 2017, she just made three semifinals and one final, at New Haven, where she lost to Daria Gavrilova.
Dominika Cibulkova VS Mona Barthel STATS
Cibulkova is easily the most lethal player Barthel has faced this week and, given how the Slovak has been playing, she should be able to come on top in this semifinal. Her return games have been exceptional this week, breaking her opponents a total of 15 times combined in the three matches.
Mona Barthel News
Mona Barthel knocked out Ysaline Bonaventure, who was seeking a place in her first WTA semifinals, in straight sets. Earlier this week, Barthel knocked out the defending champion and Hungarian #1 Timea Babos in three sets. This is a welcome run for Barthel as it has become a routine for the German to lose in the early rounds of tournaments for nearly the last 12 months.
It was at Prague last year in may when Barthel last won three consecutive main draw matches to win the title. After the fourth round appearance at Rome, Barthel won just six matches in the next fourteen tournaments for the remainder of the year. The new season of 2018 brought no change in fortune as she won just one match in the first five tournaments before entering Budapest.
