PREVIEW & TIPS FOR Slovenia VS Serbia
The EuroBasket 2017, the 40th edition of the European final tournament, will find its great winner on Sunday evening, starting at 18:30, at the finals between Slovenia and Serbia in Sinan Erdem Dome, Istanbul’s famous arena. We had a final tournament with both pleasant and unpleasant surprises in terms of calculations, of course, but the show was one to match expectations. After this final, the European Basketball Championship will go to the “4 to 4 Years” format, with all 40 editions hitherto disputed once every two years.
Igor Kokoskov’s team easily won Group A, with Poland (90-81), Finland (81-78), Greece (78-72), Iceland (102-75) and without right call France (95-78). Even in the optimal phase they had no emotions, defeating clearly Ukraine with 79-55.
The final round of the Slovenians against Latvia would bring us the best match of this European championship, a game with many points and a huge show that ended with 103-97 in favor of Dragic & Co, but the cake on the cake was to be the unbelievable victory in front of the European champion and the main favorite of the gold medals, Spain, score 92-72. Slovenia’s Big Three offered individual victory performance by Goran Dragic (15 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists) Luka Doncic (11 points, 12 rebounds, 8 assists) and Anthony Randolph (15 points, 3 rebounds, 2 passes).
Slovenia gave us an extraordinary final tournament, being undefeated by the time of this final and having a very spectacular basketball and having an important chance to win the first European title in the history of the country. The team looks very good, has very good percentages (54.1% to 2 points, 35.8 to 3 points and 79.9% to free), score at 90 points per game, recovers very well (38.9 matches per match, like Serbia ), plays very fast and loses possession very few times (11.2 turnovers per match) given the rhythm imposed. Slovenia’s main marker is Goran Dragic, the Miami Heat player, with an average of 21 points per match, adding 5.4 decisive passes.
Slovenia VS Serbia STATS
Although it is not very relevant in the context of this finale, it is worth mentioning that Slovenia won the last two EuroBasket meetings in front of Serbia (2013 and 2011) and 3 of the last 4 (2009). Serbia has come back to the EuroBasket final even with a weaker lot than the ones in the past, but the absences of Milos Teodosic or Nikola Jokic are still weighing a lot, especially when the Serbs meet a team far superior to any other they have encountered until now. I think we will see a balanced game, as bookmakers are expected, with both highly disciplined tactical teams, and the difference will be offensive from my point of view. Bogdan Bogdanovic is in a big day, but Slovenia has a fabulous duo in Goran Dragic and the hope of European basketball, Luka Doncic. The duel will be one for life and dying, but Slovenia has had an exceptional tournament and I think it will remain undefeated after the Sunday afternoon final, winning otherwise their first EuroBasket in history.
Aleksandar Djordjevic’s team did not excel at this final tournament, but ended up with no excitement in the final. Their only defeat in Group D came in front of Russia, but this did not disturb them too much, the Serbs winning the group eventually after their victories in Latvia (92-82), Turkey (80-74), United Kingdom (82- 68) and Belgium (74-54).
In the elimination stages, Serbia grew increasingly in the game and put Hungary in the finals finals, score 86-78, followed by a victory in front of Italy in quarters, in a fairly clear way, score 83-67, after an excellent match made by Bogdanovic (22 points, 6 rebounds, 4 decisive passes). In the semifinals, on the side of the painting where Lithuania or Greece was likely to have wrestled with a very ambitious Russian team but dominated it throughout the game, despite their imminent arrival in the fourth quarter, final 87-79, at the end of another very good match made by Bogdanovic (24 points, 4 assists, 3 rebounds).
Serbia is the current holder of the Olympic medal silver medal after a clear loss to a superstar team of the United States, but has not reached the EuroBasket final since 2009. A fairly common presence on the podium in many final tournaments, Serbia has again secured at least one silver medal. The team has a good score at 2 points (56.1%), scores well (82 points per match), but does not excel at 3 points (33.1%) or at free (76.4%). Bogdan Bogdanovic is the team leader and the main marker, averaging around 20 points per game.
