The reason horse racing betting is so different from betting on the dogs is that horse racing is directed by the human, not the animal. Too many people spend all their time researching the horse but not the jockey. Knowing about the jockeys driving the horse race is very important.

You need to look at their history and see how they have fared, especially in their recent races. You also want to look at how much experience they have with the horse they are riding – riding a horse for the first time can cause problems. Most importantly, you need to look at that jockey’s experience on the track – as the more familiar they are with the track, the better.

Simply put, research your jockey, check out their personal records and experience on the horse and at the track.

Use Maths

Before choosing your bet, compare the odds given by the bookmaker to the actual chance you think the horst has of winning. So, if you think a horse has ⅕ chance of winning, but the bookmaker is giving odds of 1/4 then this isn’t a value bet. However, if you believe the horse has a 50/50 chance of winning but the bookie is giving odds of 3/1 then this is a value bet. Only ever place a bet if the odds are value – and are higher than what you think the probability of the win is.

Research the History of the Horse

As well as the jockey, you do need to research the horse. You need to know about the horse that you are betting on. Some of the things to look at are:

1. The horse’s experience and record. Has the horse ever raced at this track before? Have they ever won or placed here before? How have they performed in their past few races?

2. What is the condition of the horse? Are they rested or have they been working hard recently? Have they raced recently or have they not been competitive for quite a while? Then look at injuries – has it had recent injuries or is it fully healthy?

3. Finally, look at the running style of the horse. Do they sprint off the line and drop later on? Do they start slower and reach their full pace later? Do they stick to one pace throughout the race? This is important when determining the level of success the horse will have.

The Quality of the Track

Not all tracks are equal. You need to take into account the length of the race, the different types of surfaces (dirt, turf and synthetic) and you also have to look at the weather conditions at the track and how that will affect the track condition.

You need to fully be prepared for the track conditions and how they might change – whether it will be muddy or waterlogged will have a big effect on the horses’ performances.

Understanding Bets

You need to understand the different types of bets available – straight win bets, each way bets etc. It’s not just about betting on who wins the race. Only make bets that you fully understand. Also, remember that you don’t have to bet on every race.
