Nicolas Jarry News
Nicolas Jarry, for the third time in a row, lost the first set in a tiebreak but fought back to win the match in three sets. The three set win against Horacio Zeballos on Saturday handed him his first ever ATP Tour final spot, doing so, he has become the first player from Chile to reach an ATP Tour final since Fernando Gonzalez won the title at Vina del Mar in 2009.
“It’s been a heck of a ride. I have to keep going and try to improve on and off the court and play as hard as I can. If the things go my way, then that’s good. I’m very happy and it’s my first ATP final. I hope to have many more.”- Nicolas Jarry ahead of the final.
Nicolas Jarry is the grandson of former top 20 player, Jaime Fillol sr., who has reached as high as #14 and won seven titles on tour.
There seems to be a strange pattern forming from his matches in the clay swing as all his matches in Quito (clay swing opener) have gone to the distance (including his defeat), but all his matches at Buenos Aires were settled in straight sets (including his loss). He has now played four matches this week with all four being three-set wins against Dusan Lajovic, Guido Pella, Albert Ramos Vinolas and Horacio Zeballos.
Nicolas Jarry VS Fabio Fognini STATS
This will be the first meeting between these two players. Though Fognini has got the better overall game and experience at this level compared to his opponent, Nicolas Jarry has got the exact kind of game that would trouble the Italian. These two players have met six times in the past with Fognini leading the H2H 4-2. Fognini, playing to the best of his ability, should be able to defeat Cuevas comfortably, especially considering the Uruguayan is playing at his best level right now. But Cuevas has got an impressive record in this event and should be motivated to do well once again.
Fabio Fognini News
Fabio Fognini, who usually plays a lot of three-set matches, is yet to drop a set this week at Sao Paulo. The Italian has secured three dominant wins this week with the recent one coming against the three-time defending Champion Pablo Cuevas on Saturday.
“Today was my best match this week by far. I’m really happy about my game and how I feel on court. I’m in the final now and will try to win the title. I’m feeling really good and while it’s only the beginning of the year, I’m happy and confident with my team. I have a special feeling in Brazil and hopefully they will continue to support me in the final.”- Fabio Fognini after winning his semifinal match.
Fognini has won five titles so far in his career, and all five have come on the clay court tournaments. His recent triumph came at ATP Gstaad in 2017, where he defeated a first timer Yannick Hanfmann in the final.
