Sweden begins preparations for the Euro with a friendly at home against Scandinavian rival Finland, also qualified for the first time in a final tournament. Without the star Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the group for Euro 2020, the Swedes qualified for the Europeans after finishing in 2nd place in group F of the preliminaries. The Nordics qualified for the final tournament after finishing in 2nd place in Group J of the preliminaries, with 18 points. They were overtaken by Italy, but faced Greece, Bosnia, Armenia and Liechtenstein.
Markku Kanerva’s national team started the qualifying campaign for the Qatar World Cup in 2022 with only two draws. It was a 2-2 draw with Bosnia, at home, and a 1-1 draw at Ukraine. Finland is without a victory in the last four matches played. He also lost to Wales, in the League of Nations, and Switzerland, in a friendly, before the game in Sweden.
