Elina Svitolina News

The defending champion and top seed of Dubai, Elina Svitolina, has moved past the Japanese #1 Naomi Osaka to reach her third consecutive Dubai semifinal. Trailing the second set by a break at 2-4, Svitolina won next four games to wrap up the quarterfinal in an hour and 22 minutes.

Svitolina won her first Premier 5 title in Dubai last year after defeating Wozniacki in the finals. Svitolina has made a terrific start to the season as well with a total of 12 wins in the first two months of 2018.

These wins include a Premier title at Brisbane and her first quarterfinal at the Australian Open. Like Kerber, Svitolina has secured two Top 10 wins so far in the season, with wins over Johanna Konta and Karolina Pliskova, in back-to-back matches at Brisbane.

Elina Svitolina vs Angelique Kerber STATS

Svitolina, who leads the head-to-head against Kerber by 6-5, has won her last four encounters with the German, including a semifinal match in Dubai last year. Their previous meeting was a Fed Cup rubber at Stuttgart when Svitolina eased past Kerber in straight sets.

Though Kerber has made a great start to the season, Elina Svitolina at this level is very consistent with her results, and she should have the upper hand in this quarterfinal contest.

Angelique Kerber News

Angelique Kerber has advanced to the third semifinal playing in four tournaments this season as she sailed past former world #1 Karolina Pliskova in straight sets. Kerber did not expose any break points in all of her nine service games, and she lost a total of just eight points behind her serve throughout the match.

This was Kerber’s second Top 10 win of the year after defeating Venus Williams earlier in the season at Sydney. Kerber started the 2017 season as world #1, after winning two slams in 2016, but by the time the year ended she was ranked outside the Top 20 (at #21), for the first time since 2012.

That led Keber to end her longtime partnership with the German coach Torben Beltz and hire Wim Fissett, who has coached slam winners such as Kim Clijsters and Azarenka, and other top players such as Halep and Konta.

Apart from the Australian Open finalists (Halep and Wozniacki), Kerber’s 2018 start has been the next best, with a slam semifinal and a Premier title at Sydney.
